Elite FS Display Unit Overview

Glass Screen

lowrance elite fs 9 glass screen

One of the biggest upgrades from the original Lowrance Elite series to the Elite FS is the introduction of a glass screen. This has been a breath of fresh air for users who were frustrated with the old-school monochrome screens that the fishing industry had done away with many years ago. The glass screen provides a modern and user-friendly interface that is easy to read and interact with.

Ease of Use

The glass screen has made a significant improvement in the ease of use of the device. In comparison to the original Elite series, the interaction with the Elite FS is much more enjoyable, and the information on the screen is easier to read. This reduces fatigue and makes the fishing experience more enjoyable.

Stylish Design

The Lowrance Elite FS has a sleek and stylish design that looks great both on a boat and a kayak. The fish finder is slim and takes up minimal space, making it ideal for anglers who want a device that is easy to carry and store.

Touchscreen Technology

In the past, there has been some resistance to using touchscreen technology on water, particularly because wet hands or a wet screen could cause the device to malfunction. However, the technology has come a long way, and the Elite FS touchscreen functions well even in wet conditions. This was a big tick in the box for users who were concerned about the practicality of using a touchscreen device on the water.

Screen Resolution

lowrance elite fs 9 screen review

One area where the Elite FS falls short is in its screen resolution. With a resolution of 800 by 480 pixels, it is not as high-quality as some of the other options on the market. If high-resolution screens are important to you, you may want to consider stepping up to the HDS Live.

The Elite FS comes with a cutting-edge Active Imaging 3-in-1 transducer, giving you the ability to use 2D sonar, SideScan, and DownScan Imaging all in one unit.

Active Imaging 3-in-1 Transducer

Active Imaging CHIRP Sonar DownScan and SideScan

The Lowrance Elite FS is a game-changer for anglers, equipped with a cutting-edge Active Imaging 3-in-1 transducer that combines CHIRP sonar, DownScan Imaging, and SideScan Imaging capabilities. This transducer is a pro at quickly spotting fish-holding structures like rock piles, standing timber, weed beds, ditches, and drop-offs.

CHIRP Sonar: Spotting Fish with Clarity

The Active Imaging transducer in the Elite FS delivers high-level clarity, target separation, and detail. The CHIRP sonar operates at 83/200 KHz frequency, with a maximum depth of around 1000ft at 83 KHz. This frequency range allows you to easily identify different species of fish like Bass, Catfish, Crappie, etc under your boat. You can even freeze, zoom in, and zoom out the sonar images on the Elite FS screen for a closer look.

DownScan and SideScan Imaging: Get a Better View

Lowrance Elite FS DownScan sonar screen explained

The Elite FS’s DownScan Imaging operates at either 800 kHz or 455 kHz frequency. The 455 kHz frequency provides maximum depth penetration at 300 ft, while the 800 kHz frequency provides the highest resolution images with better target separation in shallow water.

The SideScan, on the other hand, supports both 455/800 KHz frequencies. The 800 kHz frequency provides the clearest and sharpest images in shallow water and can scan an area of 150 ft on either side of the boat, while the 455 kHz frequency is more suitable for deeper waters and can scan an area of 300 ft on either side of the boat.

Autotuning Sonar

Elite FS Autotuning sonar automatically adjusting settings as fishing conditions change. Sonar can be set to “Auto” or custom settings of your choice. This can save considerable time and hassle when starting a new fishing location.

Limitations of the Active Imaging Transducer

While the Active Imaging transducer is packed with advanced features, it does have some limitations compared to other transducers from brands like Garmin and Humminbird.

The frequency of the transducer is not in MHz like the transducers from Garmin and Humminbird, which may not provide the same level of accuracy and detail as other transducers.

Active Target Live Sonar System

Lowrance Elite FS 7 and Elite FS 9 combine with ActiveTarget Live Sonar to provide a real-time view of both your lure and the fish. This allows you to see how the fish are reacting to your lure, which will greatly increase your catch rate.

You can optimize your retrieve, action, lure choice and where to cast or drop based on what you see on the screen. Active Target is perfect for professional anglers that will help to land more fish.

Lowrance Active Target offers anglers three viewing options to make each cast more successful.

The forward view shows structure and fish in front of the transducer, so you can place your lure precisely.

The down view gives you the depth and live view of what’s directly below the transducer, so you can drop your bait right on top of the fish.

active target down view

The Scout View offers a wide view in front of your transducer, so you can see what is around and decide which direction to cast in next.

Lowrance Active Target includes all kinds of trolling motor mounts. Shaft mount offers forward, down, and scout views simultaneously. Motor mount 1 includes forward and down views, while motor mount 2 has a Scout View. Transom mount is also included as an optional extra.

FishReveal

Elite FS Fish Reveal

The FishReveal feature in Lowrance Elite FS makes it easier to see fish and structure under the boat.

FishReveal makes fish appear more clearly as an arch by brightening and displaying them with greater clarity. It helps distinguish Bass from Baitfish and even identify when they are close to a structure or submerged grass.

GPS and Mapping

C-MAP Contour+ features

One of the most impressive features of the Elite FS is its integration with the C-Map Genesis mapping system, making it a valuable tool for both experienced tournament anglers and beginner kayak fishermen alike.

The unit comes preloaded with C-MAP Contour+ inland and coastal charts, which provide high resolution bathymetric 1-foot contours on over 15,000 U.S. lakes and 9,400 lakes in Canada. These charts give you an in-depth understanding of the underwater landscape, allowing you to plan your fishing strategy accordingly.

Elite FS Charts C-Map

The C-Map community mapping feature allows you to download the latest contouring information for popular waterways, giving you a competitive edge over other anglers.

You can search for underwater features such as ridges, troughs, and banks to find the best fishing spots, and target specific contour levels to increase your chances of catching more fish.

Networking

The Lowrance Elite FS Fish Finder boasts impressive networking capabilities, providing both NMEA2000 and Ethernet connectivity. The Ethernet network allows you to share sonar data with other Lowrance fish finders connected to the same network, as well as transfer charts, waypoints, and other important information, making it an ideal solution for creating a dynamic fishing system.

Moreover, the NMEA 2000 integration enables you to control your trolling motor, outboard pilot, and Power-Pole directly through the touchscreen. This integration also extends to boat engines such as Yamaha, giving you complete control over your boat electronics from the fish finder head unit.

Power Pole Affiliation

One of the most notable affiliations of the Elite FS is with the Power Pole, linking the unit with the power poles mounted on the back of your kayak. This integration provides greater control over your fishing experience, making it an ideal solution for kayak fishermen.

Integration with Trolling Motor

In addition, the Elite FS also integrates seamlessly with the Ghost trolling motor, providing a range of map and navigation functions. With the ability to tap on a map and instruct the Ghost to take you there, you have greater ease and control over your fishing expedition.

Waypoint Sharing

Finally, the Ethernet network system in the Elite FS makes it possible to share waypoints and maps quickly and efficiently. With this feature, you can easily find and save prime fishing spots. This can be especially useful for those who are exploring a new lake and are not familiar with the layout.

Wifi Connectivity

elite fs wifi connectivity

The wireless connectivity feature in Elite FS allows you to mirror your display to compatible iOS and Android devices and access charts, radar, sonar, engine data, and more from the smartphone. You can remotely control your fish finder easily through your smartphone.

You can also upgrade your Elie FS to latest software through Wifi with fast internet connection. With the easy online software and map upgrades through any internet hotspot, you’ll always have access to the latest features and support for accessories.
